Doran Special Ferrari 333SP/Judd
We present the Doran Special as an example of the race car design services we offer.
Ferrari's 333SP is one of the classic racing sportscars. First appearing in 1994, it had won many international races and championships. Good as it was, after 7 seasons it was becoming outclassed. Angerole, Inc were intimately involved with one of the last developments of this famous car.
The 333SP in the picture above is racing at Sebring in 2000. The significance of the picture is that it no longer has a V12 Ferrari engine. Instead, it is powered by a 4 litre V10 Judd. This is not a trivial change because the car's design is such that the engine is a primary structural component.
For example, because the engine is mounted rigidly to the chassis, provision has to be made for its expansion as it warms up. The Ferrari engine's expansion is accommodated by the lower engine mount while the Judd's is at the top of each bank. Making provision for this large difference between the two engine's requirements was a substantial engineering issue.
Angerole, Inc designed the conversion for Doran Racing.
We are particularly proud to have been part of this team effort. In the nature of racing, the timescale for this conversion was very tight and the car was still being built in the paddock at Sebring. Nevertheless, driven by Didier Theys, Fredy Leinhard and Mauro Baldi, the car finished the 12 Hours in 5th place. In this first race it was behind only the factory Audi and BMW teams and beat everything that General Motors could put on the track and every other private entry.
This car went on to win at Homestead in its second race and, as development progressed, it convincingly won the Watkins Glen 6 Hours (twice) and the Elkhart Lake 500 Miles (twice).
Our Judd engine conversion extended the competitive life of the 333SP chassis by two seasons. In that time, there was only one DNF, due to gearbox trouble at Mid Ohio.
